Vocational Malawi

The Project Effects

During 2011 DAPP Mikolongwe Vocational School offered training in Financial Accounting,

Agriculture, Bricklaying, Electrical Installation, Carpentry, Community Development,

Welding & Fabrication, Textile & Designing and Beauty & Hairdressing.

The students had four main areas of activities: Academic studies, school production, skills in

Basic management and entrepreneurship, Furthermore, the School also offered short training programmes, such as Skills Development Initiative (SDI) for workers in the informal sector, TEVET Induction Programme (TIP) training for school dropouts, training orphans and other vulnerable children various skills

The program was split into two categories; Formal and Informal.

• Formal Program: targeted school leavers especially those who have completed high school

– Secondary education and they have a grade 12 certificate.

• Informal Program: program mainly targeted school dropouts. The level of education as well as the degree of literacy was not defined as a condition to be selected for this program.

Apart from the vocational education which was provided to the Youths of Mikolongwe Vocational school, they also demonstrated social responsibility towards the community around the school. The community was part of the Institution as they were involved in the infrastructure development at the school.

• Mikolongwe Vocational school is used as the community centre for many cultural activities,

For example: - the community uses the school’s facilities for developmental meetings, a recreation centre, sports and other general sporting activities. With the agreement with the

Government through the Department of Social Welfare, there is a provision to train the

Youths (upon needs’ assessment) who would undergo a vocational training through the institution at no cost. It is with this arrangement that has built the relationship stronger.
