Teacher Training Introduction
The Humana People to People program trains teachers, who are capable of working in the rural setting and willing to do so, under the given conditions and with the ambition of creating change for the better.
By end of 2012, Humana People to People members were training 5.000 teachers per year at 37 teacher training colleges in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Congo D.R. Zambia and India, in cooperation with the Ministries of Education and as an integrated part of the education system, complementing government efforts and contributing to innovation and development of teacher training.
What kind of a teacher
The teacher masters his profession – teaching – with quality, is passionate about it, and has a habit and an attitude of continuously improving his or her level of skills, knowledge and competences.
The teacher is a part of the community where the school is situated, and creates good relations to all sides; to the children, to the colleagues in the school, to the parents, and to the local leaders.
The teacher transfers ethical and moral values to the children and to the community with his words as well as with his deeds.
How to train such a teacher
The Humana People to People teacher training concept places the teacher trainee in the center of his own education with the opportunity and the responsibility to acquire knowledge, skills and competences. At the same time, the training is based on team-work and social responsibility within a group, which gives a strong combination of developed individuality and collectivity.
Extensive practice in the primary school forms part of the education and is linked to studies within the subject areas of the national curriculum. Practice and theory meet in a dialectic process and enrich the learning.
The teacher trainees share many responsibilities with each other and their college teachers within the management of the college. The boarding life is integrated in the training, and these elements provide the teacher trainees with extraordinary social and working experiences, which add to the forming of their characters and personalities as true educators.
At the beginning of 2013, over 25.000 teachers have been trained and approximately 80% of them are working in rural schools. This is an achievement, meaning that the training of teachers for the rural primary schools contributes substantially to reaching the goals of universal the primary education with quality.
