Humana People to People in Brazil started its activities under the headline of Fighting Poverty in Latin America, e.g. in Brazil, Ecuador and Belize, in 2007. "Humana Povo para Povo Brasil" is established under Brazilian law and the first Community Development Project in the municipality of Cansanção took off in October 2007. In April 2008, a second project was started in the neighboring municipality of Quijingue. In April 2009, the third Community Development Project started in partnership with the State of Bahia in Itiuba. The projects are situated in the State of Bahia, the biggest and among the poorest states of the Northeastern Region of Brazil. The Northeastern Region is the area of Latin America with most poor people. The Community Development Projects are the first line of projects that Humana People to People in Brazil implements to unite forces with the poor to fight for better living conditions.
The projects
The projects are broad based Community Development Projects. The projects work to empower the families to take matters in their own hands and take action as a community to improving living conditions. Today, 8.000 families are enrolled in the projects in Cansanção, Quijingue and Itiúba, 200 Village Action Groups have been established. The projects will operate for at least 5 years in the areas. The projects are well known and supported by the municipalities and the Bahia State. The projects work with 10 lines of activities including informing and building of capacity of the families in health and livelihood matters, income generation through small projects in the agriculture sector and technical assistance. Securing water for human use and production is one of the main obstacles for progress and the projects are therefor finding solutions for this together with people. Children, youth and adults organize and participate in sports and cultural events. English, Spanish and guitar courses are very popular. Road bumbs, organizing of trash and planting of trees improve the infrastructure of the communities. Associations to take care of community interests are established or strengthened. Humana People to People in Brazil is a member of The Federation Humana People to People.
