Humana People to People India

HPPI has been implementing Community Development Projects in rural areas since September 1998 in Rajasthan and Jharkhand and has in these years improved the livelihood of more than 30.000 families, mainly concentrating on water and sanitation, health and education. 

HPPI is a member of The Federation for Associations connected to the International HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE Movement.

The projects are funded by member associations of Humana People to People as well as partners like UNICEF India, the State Government of Rajasthan, Asian Development Bank, SIDA, the HUNGER Project, World Bank, Irish Aid, Ananda Foundation, Toyota Environmental Activities Grant, World Bank, European Commission and others.

Vision:
“It is about fostering new generations with golden hearts and heads and hands, well educated and with a personal ethic of such proportions that humanized relationships of all sizes can serve as substitutes for all sorts of dehumanised phenomenon.
It is about improving democracy, advancing production, building up trade relations, generating services and it is about scanning all brains to create new portions of know how. It is about concentrating on the important task of transferring the results of efforts from places where development is well ahead to places where it is dawning or even absent. It is about establishing capable institutions for education and health. It is about improving human relationships on a contemporary basis and to modern standards. It is about emancipation of every single human being on the level of personal happiness and, at the same time making each human being responsible for the happiness of his neighbours through practical methods. And as always in the question of development it is about promoting and preventing.

Mission:
Humana People to People India's mission is to create development in the broadest sense. Especially through the establishment and implementation of projects that aim at transferring knowledge, skills and capacity to individuals and communities that need assistance to come out of poverty and dehumanized conditions. Humana People to People India works with the people as partners in finding solutions and in creating the necessary conditions to improve their living standards and to achieve their aspiration for a just and humanized life for themselves, their families and their communities. It is further Humana People to People India's mission to promote humanization of man, and to protect the weak and the outcast and to go against all forms of discrimination, oppression and exploitation. Humana People to People India aims to have an effect on the eradication of poverty, the control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, education for all, health care for all and for people to have the power to decide over their own destinies.
Humana People to People India is a non-political, non-religious organization.

Strategies:
In order to achieve its long-term objective of development, HPPI will establish projects in rural and urban areas of various states in India to improve the overall social and economical status of the people. The projects are on one side the project leader and a core staff of dedicated people, who commit themselves to stay and work with the people in the area for a long time, and on the other side it is the individuals and communities for whom we start the project, and with whom we develop and sustain the project.
The project activities are first and foremost designed according to the needs of the people in the operation area and on the concepts of Humana People to People.
A HPPI Project is often a partnership of many programs financed by different partners, and where the Project with its staff, with its relationship to the communities in the operation area and its institutional memory of collectively gathered and processed experiences, is the precondition for these programmes being successfully implemented.
As an important part of the community development projects, HPPI assists people to organize themselves in groups. These groups then form the institutions and structure through which development can take place. Examples of such groups are; the Self Help Groups, Youth Groups, Adolescent Girls Groups, Farmers Clubs, Kids Clubs and Common Interest Groups.

1. Community Development Project Alwar
The project is working with the 10 lines of Child Aid in 274 villages in six blocks of Alwar District. The main programmes are within the areas of women empowerment, youth empowerment, water and sanitation, improvement of agriculture production and reproductive child health. The project has established 299 Women Self Help Groups with 5,540 members helping them to improve existing agriculture, livestock and income generating activities.

2. Community Development Project Dausa
The project operates in 80 villages and now 13.300 families in the start-up phase. It has mobilized and trained common interest groups with 1.050 members that all were registered as living below the poverty line. Each group has chosen an enterprise, and is in the process of starting up their enterprise in order to improve their income and quality of life. The project has also established 4 Girls Education Centres. 10 Farmers Clubs with 250 members have been formed.

3. Community Development Project Virat Nagar
The project has implemented activities within the 10 lines of Child Aid in 40 villages. It has 3.000 families in the start-up phase and 7.000 families in Child Aid clubs. It has established the formation and training of 82 saving and credit groups (Self Help Groups), pre-schools, education activities, environment activities, etc. The project has also established 15 Girls Education Centres with 450 out-of-school girls and 50 Farmers Clubs.

4. Community Development Project Jaipur
The project is working with 4.000 families households in an urban slum area. Apart form establishing Self Help Groups and Youth Groups the project is having health and cleaning campaigns, constructing toilets and connecting sewer systems. The Slum Development Committee is a very active partner in the programme.

5. Community Development Project Rewari
The project is a part of the government scheme “Reproductive and Child Health, phase II”. The project gives awareness campaigns on safe motherhood to married couples and adolescents and mobilizing people to have better living conditions. At the end of 2006 the project opened the first study centre for Academy for Working Children. In 2007 it started the formation of Self Help Groups and Youth Clubs.

6. Community Development Project Nanital
The community development project is at present working in 26 slums of Haldwani Municipal area. The project is working with 1.500 families. The plans for 2008 to expand to 50 villages and target intervention on HIV/AIDS. The project signed in the end ov November an agreement with government of Uttarakhand to implement Total Sanitation Campaign and Sector Wise Project for safe drinking water and water conservation.

7. Community Development Project Thanagazi
Thanaqazi is one of the poorest Blocks in Alwar District. In May 2006 the project started implanting a poverty alleviation project, based on the organization of community groups, reaching people in 100 villages in Thanagazi Block. So far 731 groups have been formed: Self Help Groups, Farmers Clubs, Women Groups, Adolescents Girls Groups, Youth Groups and Kids Clubs. Together with officials in their villages a representative from 5 of these groups forms Village Action Committees.
8. Community Development Project Panipat
The community development project has just started, and will implement similar activities as the other Community Development Projects of HPPI.

9. Training Centre for Global Development, Rajasthan
Here young people are trained as Development Instructors over a 14 months period and are equipped with the necessary skills to take up the challenges of working at grass root level, for the people and with the people in need. With this program we are targeting youth from the local villages surrounding Behror, where Humana People to People India is running a Community Development Project covering 165 villages and a HOPE Centre providing information on HIV/AIDS to people in Behror.

10. Training Centre for Global Development, Haryana
The Training Centre has the same programme as the TCGD in Rajasthan. The school was started in June 2006 in Delhi, but moved in July 2007 to Gurgaon, Haryana . The plan for 2008 is to start 2 new teams with 30 participants in each team. The Training Centre grow vegetables for own use and for sale. During the training period the DI’s make large and effective actions in the communities.

11. Training Centre for Global Development, Pudicherry
This Training Centre was started in November 2006. The plan is to start 2 teams of 25 each in 2008. The present 14 participants will all do their project period in the Harit Sankalp – Green Action Programme, both supporting the EU funded activities and starting other HPPI inspired activities, such as forming Self Help Groups, Youth Groups and Education centres.

12. HOPE Alwar
With the 5 elements of HOPE the project operates from 3 locations: 1) The centre in Behror trains local leaders, teachers, peer educators and activists to be in the forefront of stopping the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Behror. 2) The HOPE Station in Sahajanpur works with 3.000 truck drivers along on the National highway no. 8, and  3) The HOPE Station in Alwar working with 500 street children and 310 Sex Workers in Alwar City.

13. HOPE Haryana
The project works in 2 districts of Haryana. The target groups are the so called core transmitters who are most at risk of HIV infection. They are Commercial Sex Workers, Men who have Sex with Men, Eunuchs and Injecting Drug Users. The project also targets other vulnerable people such as the Street Children, the Prison Inmates, the truckers and the Migrant Workers.

14. Green Action, Behror
The project works in 15 villages in Behror block and aims to mobilize all the 4.000 households to live up to 12 parameters defined as being in balance with a sustainable environment. The villages shall also live up to 12 parameters. The project has started up with awareness drives in all the villages, tree planting, the establishment of vermicompost units, etc.

15. Green Action, Virat Nagar
This project is aimed to address the energy needs of the rural community. This will be done by planting Jatropha plants and get the oil from the seeds. The project has established 40 Farmers Clubs with 594 members who are planting the jatropha plants in the fences where they to not take up any agriculture land. 11 farmers have additionally established 11 demonstrations fields. One of the planned results of the project is to develop a cooking stove running on plant oil as an alternative solution to the highly polluting traditional cooking fuels.

16. Green Action, Tamil Nadu
The project has in December 2006 established an office in Puducherry and is working in 60 villages in 3 Districts along the coast of Tamil Nadu. The project is mobilizing and assisting the inhabitants to rehabilitate their communities from the tsunami damages in an ecologically sustainable manner through using innovative low-cost technologies. The main activity are supply of safe water options and sanitation, groundwater recharge and water conservation, rehabilitation of salt affected agricultural land and reduce damages from future natural disasters.

17. Green Action, Dausa
This project is establishing farmers clubs and many activities to conserve the soil and water of the area. Special focus is introducing and promoting low cost / low technology methods for ground water recharge, rain water harvesting and water & soil conservation that can be of great advantage to small holders in environmentally degraded and threatened areas.

18. TCE Narela
TCE Narela was started in June 2006 with funding from Irish Aid. The project is situated in a huge area with migrant workers and many poor people living in slums working in the factories in the outskirts of Delhi. Twenty young TCE Field Officers are reaching out to 110.000 factory workers, including service workers and commercial sex workers, in the area with information and educational programmes on HIV/AIDS. The aim is within 3 years that the people have taken control of the epidemic.

19. TCE Baddi
TCE Baddi was started in November 2007 in the industrial area Baddi in Himachal Pradesh with the same aim as TCE Narela

 
20 to 24.  Academy for Working Children
Academy for Working Children is running classes for poor street- and working children that have never attended school or are school-drop-outs. The projects provides education 3–4 hours a day which means the children can continue their work. The project also organizes health check ups of the children, awareness campaigns and provides education for illiterate parents and youth from the local community.
Humana People to People are now operating Academy for Working Children projects in Behror, Gurgaon, Gaziabad, Jaipur and Neemrana with a total of 700 students.

25. HUMANA Microfinance
The project started in June 2007. The project is being implemented in 60 villages of Bansur block in Alwar district. The National Women Fund approved an amount of 250,000$ to provide micro-credit to below poverty line women in the project area.
The project has formed 203 Better Future Groups with 1.015 members. 650 women have been provided with a loan.

About India

India is located on the southern part of the Asian continent. It have five neighbouring countries, in the north there is Pakistan, to the better part of the east there is China, Nepal and Burma also shares the eastern border with India. The country has a total of 28 states and 7 union territories. India have a total population of 1.12 bilion people being the second populated country in the world from China (USAID 2008). India is 3.287.263 km2.

The Himalayan range covers the north of India; 2.410 km long from the northernmost India to the Northeast. At its widest the Himalayas is 320 km. The northern plains south of the Himalayas. The world largest alluvial plain - soil left by rivers. Here you find the mighty Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra rivers. Some of the flattest and most fertile plains in the world, where about half of India's population live. The Deccan - a huge plateau form most of the southern Peninsula.

There are over 1000 ethnic groups, but the main groups are the Indo-Aryans in the north and central and the Dravidians in the south. About 70% of the population speak languages derived from the Indo-Aryan language Sanskrit and the majority of these speak Hindi. India was colonised by United Kingdomand got its independence in 1948 and it has since then developed economically. However it has been locked into conflicts with Pakistan over the ownership of the Kashmir.
