“Malele stove” - firewood saving stove, Child Aid Southern Province, Zambia

Over 3000 firewood saving stoves have been constructed and are in use in Southern province, Zambia.

The firewood saving stove is a technology, which makes use of the locally available materials dagga and bricks. The concept of the firewood saving stove is a community based energy production initiative by Child Aid and Environment Southern Province in Zambia. Child Aid and Environment Southern Province is a project by Development Aid from People to People in Zambia.

The Child Aid and Environment Southern Province project is working with communities in Southern province to be in the forefront of development in all important aspects of life. The project covers health, education, production, poverty alleviation and environmental conservation. The project is working with households in the 11 districts in Southern province. The project provides knowledge and technical guidance required to construct and use the firewood saving stove.

The households using the firewood saving stove in Southern province are   saving up to 50% of the firewood they normally use when using the traditional open fire method.  The firewood saving stove allows all the wood to be burnt producing a hot flame with less smoke. The stove reduces the amount of smoke produced by the wood when cooking in the kitchen.

The Child Aid and Environment Southern Province project brings the simple technology to the reach of many people in and outside Southern province through the use of the firewood saving manual. The firewood saving manual was produced with the assistance from a development instructor.
